Back in June Microsoft launched Outlook.com, an effort to combined Hotmail and Live email accounts together. If you haven’t already, when you login to your Hotmail or Live webmail, you will see a Outlook.com “ad” at the bottom on your left sidebar.

Once you make the upgrade, your mail will have a totally new Windows 8 look. You will also notice a cleaner interface and that the buttons are placed in different places.

Your Profile

Here you can edit all your profile settings, such as contact information and your linked accounts (Xbox, Zune, etc). If you are wanting to change your email address from @Hotmail or @Live to @Outlook.com this is where you would go to do it as well.

On the same side of the screen, just left of your name, you will see a little gear. That’s where you can customize the feeling and look of your new Outlook.com. You can change the theme’s color, where the Reading Pane shows, and if you feel more comfortable you can go into “More Mail Settings” and edit settings such as mailing rules and spam filters.

Reading Mail

When you are reading an email, you will notice the bar on the top of the screen where all your options are. Microsoft has made it extremely easy with this new interface to have all your options readily available. From there you can Reply, Delete, Archive, etc. Personally I love this menu a lot better than GMail’s, because you can read it instead of guessing what each logo means.

Also, if you have emailed someone back and forth, the new Outlook.com organizes your emails in conversation. When you open an email that you have replied to, you can see the different emails that were sent between recipients. This features makes it unbelievable easy to spot a specific email that you were looking for.

Writing An Email

Now, when you are writing an email it looks so clean and pretty. On your left you will see the “To” field, where you can start typing the name of your contacts and they will automatically populate, or you can simply choose from your Frequent Contacts below. There is not much new on the writing box, besides the pretty nice “Attach Files” button. Once you are done writing away, you can Send it or Save it for later by clicking on the respective buttons on the bar at the top of your screen.

Your Are Done!

I hope that this article has helped you navigate your way around the new Outlook.com interface.

So, I had the smart idea of optimizing my WordPress database without making a backup first. If you are reading this post you probably made the same mistake and now when you go to your Categories tab on your WordPress Dashboard you don’t see any of your post categories.

In my case I ran a plugin that was supposed to clear every category that didn’t have posts attached to it. The problem was that I had a main Parent Category and every post was linked to a child category under the Parent. So, the plugin deleted the Parent Category and “hid” all the child categories because it didn’t know what to do with them since the parent category was deleted.

After much research I realized that I was the only one that seemed to have had this problem, so I decided to write this post to show you one way of restoring the status of your categories.

Step 1: Re-Create The Parent Category

Step 2: Find The Old Child Categories

Step 3: Edit Old Child Categories

What you are doing in this step is choosing the assigning the “Parent Category” that you re-created In Step 1. Then click the “Update” button at the button to update each category.

You Are Done!

Enjoy!

Many of my clients come to me because their computer is shutting down unexpectedly. In most instances the problem is due to an extremely dirty computer on the inside that causes the computer to overheat, and it randomly shuts down. So I’ve decided to take a few pictures of how a dirty computer looks like, that way if you run into this same problem you know exactly what to do.

As you can see on the following pictures, if a case is filthy on the outside it probably means that the inside is 10 times worse. In this particular case you can see how the front grill is covered on a thick layer of fuzz. This is one of the main places where the hot air is supposed to come out through from inside your machine. A look on the inside shows us how clogged this area is, thus impeding normal cooling. The rest of the pictures show us a little bit of the inside. If you look closely, you can see how the fan is starting to get covered by the same dust and fuzz that the outside of the computer has.

These are a few different ways that you can clean the computer to see if that fixes the problem that you were having. Note: BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING, UNPLUGGED THE COMPUTER AND LEAVE IT UNPLUGGED FOR AT LEAST 1 MINUTE.

Open the case and follow one of these methods:

Compressed Air (Air Compressor): You can use an air compressor to blow from the inside out. If you are using this method, make sure you are not doing it from too close. I would say 6 to 8 inches away.

Compressed Air (Can): If you are using this method, you might need to get as close as possible to the components. As a rule of thumbs, try to avoid touching any of the component with your hands.

Vacuum: You can use a vacuum to suck up most of the thick stuff that’s on the case and may be even some of the fuzz that’s lying around loose inside the system. If I was you I would avoid touching any of the inside components with it just to be safe.

Close the case and connected it all together. Turn it on and see if it keeps shutting down unexpectedly or if in fact you just fixed your own computer.

Step 2: Add a Custom Link to your new menu

If you are getting annoying green stars or crosses on the notification area of your Android phone, here is the best and quickest solution.

Step 1:

Go into Google Play and download an App called AirPush Detector.

Step 2:

Once AirPush Detector is installed, run it and it will show you what Applications are causing those green stars to show on your notification bar.

Step 3:

Now that you know what Applications are causing such headaches you need to uninstall the. For that you will need to go into Settings>Apps>Downloaded>(Tap on the App that AirPush Detector showed you)>Uninstall

You Are Officially Done.
